What is a Super Visa?

A super visa allows parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit them and stay in Canada for up to 2 years continuously. It is different from a multiple entry visitor visa which allows the visa holder to only stay for up to 6 months continuously or file an extension. A super visa like the visitor visa allows for multiple entries and is valid for 10 years.

The super visa can help you bring your parents or grandparents to Canada and they can help by taking care of infants or small children through their presence in Canada while you work full-time.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible to apply for a super visa, the applicant must be a parent or grand-parent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. He or she can also include a spouse in the application but cannot include dependents.

The Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident must provide a letter of financial support which should be included with the application. He or she must also meet the minimum outlined income requirements to be able to sponsor the applicant for a super visa.

Additionally, the applicant must provide proof of valid medical insurance from a Canadian insurer for a minimum of one year from the date of entry into Canada with a minimum coverage of $100,000. The applicant must also apply from outside Canada and take a basic medical exam.

You can check all the eligibility requirements here.

How to Apply?

Step 1: Get all the documents ready. The documents needed include –

  1. A letter of invitation from the Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident.
  2. Proof that the Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident meets the minimum income requirements.
  3. A document confirming that the applicant is covered by the required medical insurance.
  4. Confirmation of passing of immigration medical exam.

Step 2: Apply online or on paper from outside Canada. Applying online is easier and online applications are typically processed quicker.

However, remember that a super visa only helps you bring your parents or grandparents in Canada temporarily. If you want to bring them permanently to Canada, you must sponsor them for a Permanent Residence(PR).
